The Downhill Derby is usually held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on a Saturday in September, on North Sixth Street, beginning where it intersects with East Harlem Avenue.

Originally started in 2001 by former Police Chief Gary Morefield, the Downhill Derby provides an opportunity for children to interact with police officers in a positive environment. Over 500 kids have participated since its inception. Sponsors now also include the Monmouth Fire Department, the Monmouth VFW, and the Maple City Street Machines.

Sixty to eighty kids participate in this fun event, which is open to all third, fourth and fifth grade students at Monmouth-Roseville schools and Immaculate Conception School.
